The iconic IVECO BUS CROSSWAY turns 20: two decades of serving passenger mobility
Vénissieux, May 5th, 2026
This year, IVECO BUS celebrates the twentieth anniversary of its flagship model, the CROSSWAY. First previewed in Litomyšl and officially unveiled at the AUTOTEC trade fair in Brno, Czech Republic, in June 2006, the intercity vehicle has become a benchmark in passenger transport across Europe and beyond. With more than 70,000 units produced to date, the CROSSWAY is the manufacturer’s greatest success: today, one out of every two intercity coaches sold in Europe is a CROSSWAY.
A story of leadership and innovation
Over the years, CROSSWAY has become a reference for reliability, performance, versatility, comfort and optimised total cost of ownership (TCO). It has played a key role in the evolution of public transport, meeting the expectations of public and private operators, passengers and drivers, while continuously adapting to increasingly stringent sustainability requirements.
Produced at Vysoké Mýto – IVECO BUS’s main production site and one of Europe’s largest coach manufacturing plants, which celebrated 130 years of history in 2025 – CROSSWAY vehicles benefit from proven expertise and long-standing reputation for excellence.
“By celebrating the 20th anniversary of CROSSWAY, we pay tribute to a model that embodies IVECO BUS’s commitment to ever more sustainable mobility. This international success is the result of continuous listening to our customers’ needs and of our recognised expertise, driven by our teams. CROSSWAY is a true symbol of our ability to anticipate changes in the sector and to offer solutions tailored to tomorrow’s challenges,” said Claudio Passerini, President, Bus Business Unit, Iveco Group. He added: “For 20 years, CROSSWAY has brought territories and people closer together. Today, we celebrate the journey already travelled and the one ahead.”
Designed for efficiency, built to last
Designed for short-distance scheduled services, employee transport, and school transport, CROSSWAY is also available in a Low Entry version with a low front floor, ideal for suburban or interurban missions that require an optimal balance between accessibility and seating capacity. It is engineered to deliver long-term performance, with optimised total cost of ownership, while embracing a sustainable approach that places people at the heart of mobility.
A continuously evolving, sustainable range at the heart of technological neutrality
A pioneer in environmental performance, CROSSWAY was the first vehicle in its segment to anticipate the Euro IV standard and has continued to evolve since its launch in 2006 to support the energy transition.
The range has expanded steadily, with the introduction of the Low Entry concept as early as 2007, followed in 2017 by a three‑axle Low Entry version measuring 14.50 metres, demonstrating its ability to adapt and meet increasingly diverse operational requirements.
Today, available in five versions (Low Entry, Pop, Line, HV and Pro), in multiple lengths and with a wide range of powertrains, the CROSSWAY range provides operators with an unmatched choice: natural gas since 2017, hybrid since 2022, B100 since 2024, and 100% battery-electric versions launched in 2023 and 2024. This diversity of energy solutions perfectly illustrates IVECO BUS’s technological neutrality strategy, enabling each territory and operator to select the solution best suited to their operational and decarbonisation objectives.
A distinctive design
Since its launch, CROSSWAY’s distinctive and dynamic personality has reflected its quality and reliability. Its interior combines comfort and functionality, aesthetics and practicality, with meticulous attention to the smallest detail. Its spacious, bright and airy passenger compartment, enhanced by large glazed surfaces, facilitates movement and accommodates generous overhead luggage racks, complemented by underfloor luggage compartments.
International success and prestigious awards
Thanks to its reliability and modularity, CROSSWAY has become a benchmark in intercity transport across Europe. Designed to meet the demands of the most extreme climatic conditions and to address the specific expectations of each market, it is now present in more than 45 countries worldwide, including Africa, Asia and the Middle East. From Alta in the Arctic Circle to Kazakhstan, from Oman on the Arabian Peninsula to Dakar in Senegal, CROSSWAY is recognised by international operators for its reliability and performance.
The CROSSWAY range has received numerous industry awards, including the prestigious “Sustainable Bus of the Year” title five times (2018, 2020, 2023, 2024 and 2026) for its natural gas and electric versions. These distinctions are complemented by several European awards, including the “International Bus & Coach Award 2017”, the “International Sustainability Award 2021”, the “International Busplaner Sustainability Award 2021” and the “TOP Responsible Company 2025” award in the “Innovation for Sustainability” category. This recognition was further strengthened by the “International Busplaner Sustainability Award 2026”, presented in Berlin in the 12-metre electric bus category to the CROSSWAY Low Entry ELEC.
CROSSWAY: connecting people and communities
For twenty years, CROSSWAY has told the story of the women and men who, generation after generation, design, manufacture and continuously improve a vehicle that has become a daily companion on the road. It also carries the experiences of millions of passengers: first school journeys, access to education, leisure and sport, and shared moments of everyday life. By connecting territories, people and opportunities, CROSSWAY creates bonds and opens new horizons.
The twentieth anniversary of CROSSWAY perfectly illustrates the spirit of innovation that drives IVECO BUS and confirms its standing as a pillar of the passenger transport industry. A true benchmark, this model has shaped industry standards and continues to meet the expectations of international operators while supporting more sustainable mobility. For 20 years, CROSSWAY has connected territories and lives, driven by a clear ambition: to keep people moving sustainably.
